Mapping the spiritual hierarchies from the Seraphim to our Guardian Angels with their planetary spheres and sacred names.
The First Hierarchy: Spiritual Hierarchies
The Divine Triad - Spirits of the Godhead
These beings dwell closest to the source of all existence. They are so exalted that they barely interact with material creation directly, instead working through the lower hierarchies.
1. Seraphim - Spirits of Love
Planetary Sphere: The Fixed Stars / The Zodiac Itself Sacred Names: Seraphiel, Metatron, Kemuel, Nathanael
The Seraphim are beings of pure, blazing love, the closest to the Divine Source. In traditional imagery, they hey radiate the primordial will of the cosmos, the original impulse of divine love that set creation in motion. These are not beings you pray to, they're barely conceivable to human consciousness. They work with cosmic love itself as their medium.
2. Cherubim - Spirits of Harmony
Planetary Sphere: The Zodiac Circle
Sacred Names: Cherubiel, Ophaniel, Rikbiel, Zophiel
The Cherubim are the four-faced guardians (lion, ox, eagle, human) described in Ezekiel's vision. They are the keepers of celestial wisdom and cosmic memory, the Akashic librarians, if you will. Spiritual Science sees them as beings who hold the archetypal patterns and harmonies that govern all existence. They maintain the cosmic blueprint.
3. Thrones - Spirits of Will
Planetary Sphere: Saturn
Sacred Names: Zaphkiel (Tzaphkiel), Orifiel, Zabkiel
The Thrones are described as "wheels within wheels", revolving, fiery structures that embody divine stability and cosmic law. They sacrifice their own being to create the foundation upon which reality rests. Associated with Saturn, the planet of boundaries and time, the Thrones establish the limitations and structures necessary for form to exist at all.

The Second Hirearchy: Spiritual Hierarchies
They are the cosmic governors, the architects of reality, this middle triad shapes and maintains the cosmic order. They govern the movements of celestial bodies, the passage of ages, and the fundamental laws of manifestation.
4. Kyriotetes (Dominions) - Spirits of Wisdom
Planetary Sphere: Jupiter
Sacred Names: Zadkiel (Tzadkiel), Hashmal, Yahriel, Muriel
The Dominions regulate the activities of all lower angelic orders. Imagine them as cosmic administrators who ensure the divine plan unfolds properly across all levels of existence.
Linked to Jupiter, planet of expansion and law, they carry orbs and scepters symbolizing their authority. They embody divine wisdom in action.
5. Dynamis (Mights/Virtues) - Spirits of Movement
Planetary Sphere: Mars
Sacred Names: Camael (Kamael), Raphael, Barbiel, Uzziel
The Virtues are the beings behind cosmic motion, the rotation of planets, the cycles of seasons, the rhythms of time. They perform what humans would call "miracles," manipulating natural law from within. Connected to Mars and its dynamic force, these spirits govern change, transformation, and the great turning of the cosmic wheels.
6. Exusiai (Powers/Elohim) - Spirits of Form
Planetary Sphere: The Sun
Sacred Names: Michael, Raphael, Sammael, Verchiel
Here we reach the sphere of the Sun, the center of our planetary system and the source of form itself. The Exusiai (also called Elohim in Genesis) are the actual shapers of physical reality. These are warrior spirits who maintain cosmic order against chaotic forces. Michael, the great solar archangel, is often considered their chief. They gave form to the Earth and continue to work with the evolution of material existence.

The Third Hierarchy: Spiritual Hierarchies
As the servants of Humanity, our personal spiritual guides, the final triad works most directly with human evolution. These beings are intimately involved in our individual and collective development.
7. Archai (Principalities) - Spirits of Personality/Time Spirits
Planetary Sphere: Venus
Sacred Names: Haniel (Anael), Cerviel, Nisroc
The Archai are the Time Spirits, beings who guide entire epochs of human civilization. Each major age (think the Greco-Roman period, the Renaissance, our current age) is overseen by an Archai. They work through culture, zeitgeist, and the collective consciousness of humanity during specific eras. Associated with Venus, they bring beauty and cultural development to each age.
8. Archangels - Spirits of Fire/Folk Spirits
Planetary Sphere: Mercury
Sacred Names: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Chamuel, Jophiel, Zadkiel
The seven great Archangels are probably the most familiar to most people. They oversee nations, religions, and large groups of people. Each has a specific function:
Michael - Warrior and leader, spirit of courage
Gabriel - Messenger, spirit of revelation
Raphael - Healer, spirit of science and medicine
Uriel - Light-bearer, spirit of wisdom
Chamuel - Spirit of pure love
Jophiel - Spirit of beauty and illumination
Zadkiel - Spirit of mercy and benevolence
Connected to Mercury, planet of communication, they serve as bridges between the divine and human realms.
9. Angels - Messengers and Guardians
Planetary Sphere: The Moon
Sacred Names: Individual guardian angels (countless names)
Finally, we reach the Angels, the beings closest to us. Every human being has a guardian angel from birth until death. These are highly individualized beings who guide, protect, and inspire their human charges. Associated with the Moon, symbol of the soul and reflection, these angels work intimately with our inner lives, conscience, and spiritual development.
The Planetary Ladder
The hierarchies descend through the ancient planetary spheres in the Chaldean order:
Fixed Stars/Zodiac → Seraphim & Cherubim Saturn → Thrones Jupiter → Kyriotetes Mars → Dynamis Sun → Exusiai Venus → Archai Mercury → Archangels Moon → Angels Earth → Humanity
Humanity is destined to become the Tenth Hierarchy, Spirits of Freedom and Love. What makes Steiner's system compelling isn't its claim to absolute truth, but its coherent vision of how spiritual beings might work together in the evolution of consciousness from the highest realms of pure divinity down to the individual human soul.
